THE Dandenong Show’s art and craft coordinator has written a will urging show officials to start a perpetual trophy to honour all volunteers.
Sharon Harris said the trophy would recognise the strong efforts by show volunteers, and be awarded to the most outstanding volunteer at the conclusion of each show.
Ms Harris said that after 35 years of involvement with the Dandenong Show she felt more could be done to recognise its volunteers.
“The whole show is run by volunteers,” she said. “Without them it would not survive at all.
“This art and craft exhibition was put together over the last three weeks, and as coordinator I would be nothing without my volunteers.”
Ms Harris said she suffered a stroke this year and had struggled through an intense recovery period to continue working on the show.
So determined is the 60-year-old to ensure volunteer efforts are maintained that even in her death she has provisioned for incentives.
“In my will I have asked that a perpetual trophy be started for volunteer of the year at the show,” she said.
“Volunteers do not get enough exposure and I want the hard work to be carried on.”
Ms Harris said she was already urging people to register their interest to volunteer for next year’s Dandenong Show.
“We’re always looking out for new volunteers,” she said.
