Decision soon on library, city hall

THE future of Springvale’s library and city hall will be decided early next year.
Residents eagerly awaiting the results of a community consultation program over options for the future of Springvale’s municipal buildings will have to wait until the new year.
Phil Reed and James McGarvey from the project’s Agenda Group briefed councillors and council officers this month on the preliminary findings of the research.
A comprehensive report providing a ‘shared vision’ for the future of a number of important community assets will be presented to the council in early 2007.
Interim findings highlight the need to expand library services and improve the existing facilities.
The findings also show a need for a closer review of the council’s land holdings in the Springvale Shopping Centre around Warwick Avenue, with a view towards invigorating commercial and community activity and increasing car parking and improving traffic management.
There must also be an acceptance of the merging the council’s administrative functions into Dandenong.
Greater Dandenong mayor Youhorn Chea, commended the research work undertaken by the Agenda Group.
“This qualitative research and strong community feedback will assist the council significantly when it comes to deciding on a way forward for a range of council facilities in 2007,” he said.
“I thank all community members for their interest and participation in this project.”
