SPRINGVALE’S Princes Highway East and Webb Street intersection is among the worst in the state for crashes involving pedestrians.
VicRoads said crash data for the past five years revealed there’d been nine casualty crashes at the blackspot, three involving serious injuries.
VicRoads policy and programs executive director James Holgate said pedestrian casualty numbers continued to rise.
“By listing the black spots, we hope to remind pedestrians of their vulnerability and to take extra care when crossing the road,” he said.
VicRoads is joining road safety partners Victoria Police, the Transport Accident Commission and the Department of Justice to raise awareness of pedestrian safety as part of the second United Nations Global Road Safety Week.
Mr Holgate said there was only so much that the authorities could do.
“Put simply, if the red man symbol is activated or flashing, do not walk or run onto the road,” he said.
“When the red man symbol is flashing, it is an indication that pedestrians already on the crossing must exit as soon as possible.”
He said pedestrians should also beware of distractions.
“Pause your music and don’t use your phone while crossing the road,” he said.
“Drivers should take their time to check for pedestrians, especially at intersections and drive within the speed limit.”
