SOFT mud at the EastLink construction site saved a motorcycle rider from serious injury this week.
A van and motorcycle caught fire after a collision on the Monash Freeway near Noble Park North.
The motorcycle was travelling through the EastLink-Monash Freeway interchange on Monday at 11.45pm when it clipped a water-filled barrier, throwing the rider from the bike.
Several following vehicles collided after the Kawasaki motorcycle became stuck underneath a Toyota van and was dragged along the road.
CFA firefighters said the van and motorcycle then burst into flames.
But the rider who was thrown from the bike landed in soft mud near the EastLink construction site, escaping serious injury.
The van driver and other motorists involved in the collision suffered minor injuries.
