NEW rules for installing garden watering systems will be enforced for all South East Water customers.
All new automatic systems must be fitted with a rain or soil moisture sensor, prices for which start from $50.
This is an addition to the permanent water saving rule, which allows automatic watering systems to be used only from 10pm to 10am.
Rain or soil moisture sensors are designed to prevent automatic watering systems from operating when there’s rain or when the soil is wet.
South East Water managing director Dennis Cavagna said the additional requirement was important for the ongoing conservation of water supplies.
The five main permanent water saving rules are: Use manual watering systems only between 8pm and 10am, use automatic systems only between 10pm and 10am, fit a hose with a trigger nozzle, don’t hose paved areas, and apply to fill a new pool or spas with a capacity of 2000 litres or more.
Those who do not follow these rules may be hit with a $1000 fine for the first offence, while subsequent offences will attract fines of up to $2000.
Anyone buying a rain or soil moisture sensor may be eligible for a $30 rebate.
