Extended program gives a helping hand

GREATER Dandenong’s disadvantaged can now get a free meal on a Thursday night.
Cornerstone Contact Centre in Dandenong has recruited 40 volunteers so it can serve up the feed.
“Our regulars told us Thursday nights were the only weeknight in Dandenong without a free food program operating,” co-ordinator Don Cameron said.
“Everyone who works with hungry people knows that people with full bellies are healthier, more law-abiding and much friendlier than people with empty bellies.
“I often get hugged by men who I give a food hamper to.”
The Christian faith mission combines welfare assistance with a drop-in facility, is trans-denominational and a safe haven for people who live on society’s fringes.
“We are very blessed to have hundreds of wonderful volunteers who come in to help our programs continue,” Mr Cameron said.
The Baptist Union will give Cornerstone a grant for half the cost of a new oven to help it continue its work.
“We must purchase the oven to get the grant so when we raise the other half of the cost of the oven we will get it,” Mr Cameron said.
“I know I am very biased but I think our kitchen staff are some of the hardest working people in Dandenong and they often produce fantastic meals with limited resources.
“One of our most experienced volunteers is Glenda, who worked as a kinder teacher for many years around Dandenong.
“It’s amazing how many people who come in recognise Glenda and she works hard serving lunch and is wonderful at talking to lonely people.”
