Booze busters!

By Shaun Inguanzo
A DRIVER blew more than four times the legal blood-alcohol limit during a major assault on drink-driving in Springvale last week.
Police nabbed more than 40 drink drivers from 4500 people breath tested last Friday in what has been labelled a disgraceful display of breaking the law.
Police from the Greater Dandenong Traffic Management Unit coordinated Operation Crossroads which saw six booze buses placed in and around the infamous Springvale Junction intersection.
The junction includes Centre Road, Police Road, Princes Highway and Springvale Road.
It was the first Operation Crossroads in Springvale this year, with senior police bitterly disappointed at the number of drink drivers.
Senior Sergeant Ken Dunlop said the result was ‘extremely disappointing’ and that the only positive was that police knew where to target drink driving.
“Time and time again this operation continues to detect a high number of drink drivers who have decided to endanger their safety and the safety of others by going out on the road after drinking,” Sen Sgt Dunlop said.
“A consistent and well-known contributing factor to road fatalities and serious collision is alcohol.
“People need to realise that even the smallest amount of alcohol in the blood stream can impair one’s driving skills.
“We will continue to use a range of measures to target drivers who choose to disregard the law and drive while under the influence.”
One man blew a blood alcohol reading of .204 per cent – more than four times the legal limit.
A woman recorded a reading of .163 per cent, more than three times the limit.
Police said their licences were immediately suspended.
Of those caught on Friday, 32 were male and 12 female.
Thirty were full licensed drivers while 14 held probationary licences.
Police were also on the prowl for other traffic-related offences last Friday night.
They also nabbed 10 repeat drink-drivers, five disqualified or suspended drivers, two unlicensed drivers, six unroadworthy and five unregistered vehicles.
The results were an increase from last November’s Operation Crossroads which nabbed 30 drink-drivers from more than 4800 drivers tested.
