Geall’s Winfrey Lass one of winning double

WINFREY Lass completed a winning double for Lara greyhound trainer David Geall in the heats of the Group 1 Hawkins Media Laurels at Sandown Park last Thursday night.
Starting a $2 favourite in the final event of the night, Winfrey Lass started moderately before sweeping to the lead down the back and storming to the line to win by three lengths in the best of the night, 29.9 seconds.
Earlier, Geall’s promising sprinter Miss Tayliana made it five wins from seven starts when she led all the way to win heat five in 30.11 seconds.
Multiple Group race finalist Miss Hot Gossip progressed to the semi-finals with an emphatic win in 29.93 seconds.
The Western Australian Oaks winner and Peter Mosman place-getter was sent out a $1.30 favourite and didn’t disappoint, pulling away from Lynlea Lyn ($23.50) to win by 3.25 lengths.
Impeccably bred bitch Fergalicious ($1.80 favourite) stamped her class on the series, winning heat three in 29.93 seconds.
By super sire Brett Lee and out of leading dam Chloe Jones, Billy Galea’s rising star proved too good for her rivals, leading all the way to win by 4.25 lengths.
Also winning their heats were Spiral Rose (30.18 seconds), Pure Clarity (30.23), Bernmar Fury (30.23), Smurf’s Opal (30.32), Jessica Albaz (30.41) and Paddy’s Meika (30.52).
Four semi-finals will be run at Sandown Park tonight (Thursday), along with the heats of the Group 2 McKenna Memorial over the 715m.
The Group 1 Hawkins Media Laurels is Australia’s richest race for age restricted bitches, and carries a $50,000 prize for the winner of the final to be run on Thursday, 28 June.
