DANDENONG police who travelled to war-ravaged South Sudan will give an inspiring presentation to local retailers to help them better understand the culture of the city’s newest wave of refugees.
The Dandenong Retail Traders’ Association (DRTA) will welcome Dandenong Senior Sergeant Ian Gillespie, who travelled with colleague Senior Constable Joey Herrech to South Sudan in April to learn more about Sudanese way of life, and why many are fleeing the country.
Since 2001, more than 2000 Sudanese people have settled in Greater Dandenong, and the city now has one of the highest Sudanese populations in Australia
The Tuesday, 7 August DRTA general meeting will be held in the President’s Room at the Grand At Dandenong, 139-155 Thomas Street, Dandenong, beginning at 6pm.
“The Sudanese community is becoming an important element of Greater Dandenong and Sen Sgt Ian Gillespie will provide Central Dandenong retailers with information on what he experienced during his trip,” DRTA chairman Roy Aspinall said.
“All retailers are welcome at the general meeting, be they members or not, but we do hope that all retailers will eventually join.
“Attendance is a wonderful opportunity to network with fellow central Dandenong retailers.
“Tea and coffee is supplied and as well as our speakers there are normally Victoria Police members plus council representatives in attendance to provide information and for those present to discuss issues with.
“VicUrban has also assured us that they will regularly have a representative in attendance.”
