Popular park grows

MELBOURNE Water has released a pocket of land to the City of Greater Dandenong for public use.
The plot at 44 Somerset Drive in Dandenong North has been added to the council’s current lease of land in Tirhatuan Park, and will function as public open space.
Melbourne Water was planning on selling the land last year, but a public outcry forced the water body to hold off on the sale.
City of Greater Dandenong mayor Youhorn Chea commended Melbourne Water for releasing the land.
“The decision to include the parcel of land under the council’s current lease agreement is a great outcome for Melbourne Water, residents and the council,” Cr Chea said.
“This land provides a key access point for people wanting to go to and from the park.
“Tirhatuan is one of the city’s premier parks and its popularity among residents indicates how important it is to the community.”
The council said that Tirhatuan Park offers public open space, including a playground and walking and bike paths.
Dogs can be exercised off-leash in designated areas.
