POLICE arrested a teenager after he unsuccessfully tried to steal a car in Dandenong on Tuesday night.
Police believe the 19-year-old went to a Clow Street house after 4am and asked a male resident to use the phone to contact emergency services.
The 40-year-old man, who was home with his 36-year-old wife and children, aged eight and two, dialled 000 and spoke to the operator before handing the teenager the cordless home phone.
Police said while speaking with the operator, the teenager produced a knife and made demands for the resident’s car keys before entering the house and searching through cupboards and a handbag.
He was confronted by the 36-year-old wife in the lounge room, who handed him the car keys.
The teenager then started the car with the apparent intention of stealing it, but was unable to reverse out for reasons unknown.
When police arrived the teenager threw down the knife and surrendered without further incident.
A Dandenong man is being interviewed by local detectives in relation to aggravated burglary and armed robbery.
