Time to step it out

GREATER Dandenong residents over the age of 65 are encouraged to put on their walking shoes and step on down to Dandenong Library.
There, they can borrow a free pedometer kit to help celebrate the launch of the South East Active Living for Seniors (SEALS) program.
National physical activity guidelines recommend that adults engage in at least 30 minutes of moderate physical activity each day.
Greater Dandenong mayor Youhorn Chea said walking was an easy way to achieve this target.
“Being physically active is an important part of leading a healthy lifestyle,” Cr Chea said.
“Maintaining physical fitness as we age provides a range of health benefits, and the good news is anyone can do it. The activity doesn’t have to be vigorous. Moderate activity, such as brisk walking, is great for your health.”
The SEALS kit contains a pedometer, a step logbook to record your progress and other helpful information. The pedometer is a small device that is designed to clip on to clothing near the hip and registers each step you take.
The SEALS program is a cooperative venture between the City of Greater Dandenong libraries, the Greater Dandenong Community Health Service and the South East Primary Care Partnership. It aims to increase the level of physical activity among older adults and is funded by the State Government under the Seniors Go For Your Life initiative.
