Program to help Vietnamese women

A PROGRAM to prevent Vietnamese women developing mental illnesses that could lead to problem gambling is under way in Springvale this week.
Gambler’s Help Southern is running the six-week program that started last Friday at the Greater Dandenong Community Health Service building in Buckingham Avenue, Springvale.
It is being run in conjunction with the Springvale Indo-Chinese Mutual Assistance Association (SICMAA) which provides welfare services to Springvale’s Vietnamese community.
Gambler’s Help Southern counsellor My Tien Lam told Star the program was open to Vietnamese women who wanted to learn more about self-help and mental health.
She said the program was free and would cover issues such as women and depression, domestic violence, vitamin supplements, and gambling in Victoria and harm minimisation.
The sessions will also include leisurely activities such as making Christmas biscuits, Scout knotting, and relaxation techniques.
For concerned mothers, a session on the risk associated with using illicit drugs Ice and ecstasy will also be held.
