MORE than 20 police officers in training descended on Dandenong Plaza last Thursday.
The probationary constables from the Victoria Police Academy spoke with traders and shoppers as part of Project OPTIC (Operational Police Training in the Community).
Senior Sergeant Simon Delaney said the 23 recruits were in week 19 of their training and had support from supervisors from the academy and from Springvale and Dandenong police stations.
“It’s a chance for the recruits to use their communication skills and start to engage with the public,” he said.
“It’s the first time in uniform for them to engage with the public.
“Dandenong is such a diverse community, it’s a great stepping stone for them to realise they need to adapt their approach.
“They probably realise that they can have a bit of an impact in the community. It gives them confidence.”
Sen Sgt Delaney said the recruits received fantastic community support.
“The feeling we get from the local traders, they’re pretty happy for us to be there, too,” he said.
