Duty calls, so it’s follow the leader

SO WHAT does a mayor do on an average day?
That was the question two lucky bidders from the Mayoral Charity Ball had answered last week when their prize – spending a day with Greater Dandenong mayor Youhorn Chea – came to fruition.
Milan and Davie Salaria jumped at the chance to follow Cr Chea for a day after successfully outbidding other ball attendees in September.
On 22 November the couple followed Cr Chea as he performed his typical, daily mayoral duties.
They also enjoyed a yum cha lunch and tried on Cr Chea’s mayoral robes.
“We have learned so much about the mayor’s role, council and councillors,” Milan said.
“We now have a much greater understanding of what goes on.
“It was great to experience what happens behind the scenes. We were amazed at the infrastructure we saw.
“I loved putting on the robes and realise that Youhorn is very well respected in the community.”
Cr Chea said he enjoyed the experience and praised Milan and Davie for their enthusiasm to learn about the council.
“Being in touch with the community is a vital aspect of my role as mayor and of councillors generally,” Cr Chea said.
“I was delighted to be able to share my day with two community members who showed great interest in the workings of council.”
