DANDENONG Police say they are working in partnership with Grenda Corporation to strengthen bus security after a 17-year-old girl was indecently assaulted on a bus last week.
Detectives from the Greater Dandenong Crime Investigation Unit said the 17-year-old was seated on a bus travelling along Gladstone Road in Dandenong North when a man sitting behind her reached around the seat and touched her breast several times.
The girl then left the bus at the same location as the man, who followed her and tried to hold her hand and asked her to kiss him.
Police are now appealing to the community to help track down the man so they can speak to him.
He is described as aged in his 20s, 182cm and of Indian appearance. Police believe he was ‘simple-minded’ and had a slim build.
Detective Senior Constable Stuart Freeman said anyone who found themselves in a similar predicament should alert the bus driver and stay on the bus.
The driver should then contact police, who will assist if necessary.
He said police were working on an operation with Grenda Corporation to avoid repeat situations.
Det Sen Const Freeman urged others who had experienced indecent assaults on a bus to contact police immediately.
“If you don’t report it we can’t identify it as a problem. But if we can identify it as a problem we can then address it properly,” he said.
Contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
