TWO hoons will be without their cars for the next month after police nabbed them in the act in Greater Dandenong.
Cardinia Highway Patrol members detected a driver travelling at double the 80km/h speed limit on the Dandenong Bypass in Keysborough, about 11.50pm on Friday 4 September.
They impounded the Subaru WRX for 30 days at a cost of $972 and the 25-year-old man behind the wheel will be charged on summons with speed-related offences.
The same police on Saturday 5 September saw a driver perform a burnout on the Princes Highway in Noble Park.
The 23-year-old man’s Holden HSV will be locked up for 30 days at a cost of $917 and he’ll be charged on summons with driving-related offences.
The two locations are known hoon trouble spots and the police action follows calls from Keysborough residents to curb drag racing on the Dandenong Bypass.
In a statement, the Keysborough South Action Group said the issue had persisted for nearly three years.
“It starts on Thursday and continues Friday and Saturday nights between 11.30pm and 3am,” the statement said.
“When will the ‘harmless fun’ turn into a tragedy?”
Greater Dandenong Highway Patrol Acting Senior Sergeant Andrew Smart said burnouts were common in industrial areas and driving at high speeds was taking place on the Princes Highway as well as the Dandenong Bypass.
“We’re currently running operations on both with support from the entire region,” he said.
