Major expansion at Gateway

By Shaun Inguanzo
GATEWAY Industries in Dandenong has launched its biggest expansion in more than two decades of operation.
The Federal Government committed $238,000 to Gateway for the development of a second storey on its mezzanine floor.
On Monday night the dream was realised with the opening of the new mezzanine floor, spurred on by Melbourne Football Club legend David Neitz and Holt MP Anthony Byrne.
Gateway Industries president Russell Smith said the floor essentially doubled the centre’s workspace.
Mr Smith said Gateway Industries was run by a volunteer committee and employed 47 people with disabilities.
It then tenders for contracts from local businesses and the City of Greater Dandenong council to clean parks, empty bins, tidy places and maintain gardens.
The employment is both stimulating and rewarding for employees who may not be able to secure work in other forms of industry, Mr Smith said.
Upon a tour of Progress Street facility, Star noted that Gateway Industries also builds wooden furniture to sell, including wine racks.
Gateway Industries is always looking for work, Mr Smith said, and offered local businesses great contract work with a reputation for friendly service.
