Kelly shows prize catch

By Jade Lawton
A BUDDING Bayles sculptor will have one of her works displayed in a Dandenong park.
Kelly Carson, 20, won the best outdoor sculpture prize, sponsored by Greater Dandenong, at the Chisholm Institute of TAFE’S annual Ron Raldo show this year. Her prize was $1000 and public display of her winning piece.
The sculpture, called “catch of the day” is a fish made from hundreds of knives and forks welded together. Some may be able to recognise their own contributions to the work – Ms Carson trawled through local op-shops for a month to source her materials, which ended up costing her about one hundred dollars.
It is the first major metal piece for Ms Carson, who finished a diploma in visual arts at the Chisholm Institute’s Frankston campus this year.
“I’ve done ceramics, concrete and mosaics, but metal is my favourite at the moment,” she said.
Ms Carson’s inspiration for the work came from time spent at the beach. She plans to create a series of beach-inspired metal sculptures.
The sculpture is now the property of Greater Dandenong.
While she was rapt her work had been chosen for display, Ms Carson said the piece would be missed.
“My mum is traumatised – she wanted it,” she said.
