Hoon hunt gets results

By Lia Bichel
HOONS have driven Dandenong to tenth place on a Victorian Police list of suburbs with the most-seized vehicles.
Fifty-seven vehicles were seized in Dandenong last year. Acting Senior Sergeant Robert Brew described the number as bittersweet because it showed police were confiscating vehicles belonging to dangerous drivers.
However, he is disappointed hooning occurs.
“We’re unhappy that it’s still going on and would be a lot happier if we didn’t have this behaviour happen in the first place,” he said.
The list stated that males were the most likely to offend, as 96 per cent of hoons caught last year were men.
Thirty-four per cent were between the age of 18 and 21 and the most common reasons for impoundment were because of excessive speed and improper use of a motor vehicle.
Sen Sgt Brew said such behaviour had left police concerned about public safety, but he was confident that police were doing everything in their power to get hoons off the roads.
“The driving force to stop hoons is because of safety,” he said.
“All we can do is continue to target types of behaviour that lead to seizures. Hopefully, through education and awareness, hoons will get the message.”
