A man has been taken off the road for two years after falsely denying to police he was the driver of a car clocked at 183 km/h by EastLink’s speed cameras under the Dandenong Bypass.
Revitesh Bheemul was driving the vehicle southwards about 3.45am on 6 February when it was captured by the permanent speed cameras, Dandenong Magistrates’ Court was told.
Subsequently, the vehicle’s registered owner nominated Bheemul as in possession of the vehicle.
In a police interview, Bheemul denied he drove the vehicle, the court heard.
When he was then asked who was the driver at the time, he gave no comment.
In pleading guilty, Bheemul told the court on 25 July his actions were “pretty stupid”.
Magistrate Julie O’Donnell said Bheemul would have been facing 12 months’ off the road for his speeding.
But the accused’s initial denials cost him a mandatory two years’ disqualification.
Bheemul was also convicted, fined $1000 and ordered to complete a safe-driving program.
