Stingrays make the grade

NINE Dandenong Stingrays have been selected in the preliminary Vic Country squad ahead of this year’s National Under-16 Championships.
The 48-man squad was announced earlier this month, and it looks likely that the outstanding local contingent will play a key role in the success of the country boys in July.
The following players will be vying for a spot on the plane to Sydney: Adam Ashton (Edithvale-Aspendale), Matt Buntine (Berwick), Todd Elton (Frankston), Matt Fair-bairn (Langwarrin), Adam Giobbi (Narre Warren), Jordan Kelly (Edithvale-Aspendale), Dylan Shiel (Edithvale-Aspendale), Adam Treloar (Noble Park/Berwick) and Piva Wright (Noble Park/Berwick).
That group will form the nucleus of Dandenong’s under-18 squad over the next couple of years, so Stingrays region manager Darren Flanigan is understandably optimistic about the future.
“We’ll have a good team if we can get all those boys on the track together,” he said last week.
