BUSINESS is booming in Dandenong, with the number of retail and commercial businesses skyrocketing over the past two years.
A Retail and Commercial Occupancy Review identified 916 businesses operating in Central Dandenong.
The City of Greater Dandenong’s last review in 200203 showed 834 businesses operating in the area, up from just 827 in 200102.
Greater Dandenong Chamber of Commerce president David Carlson said Dandenong had grown considerably over the years and would continue to grow.
“The growth is compounding, providing badly needed employment,” Mr Carlson said.
Economic Development Unit (EDU) retail development coordinator Leanne McCready said the boom in businesses highlighted the recognition of Dandenong as a growth area.
“It shows a confidence in the area that people are coming in and setting up business in Dandenong,” Ms McCready said. “We hope to see that increase as time goes on and less vacancy.”
The council has also begun the processes to implement web based promotion of business in Greater Dandenong.
Ms McCready said the council’s local Internet directory currently listed businesses free of charge.
The new plan would give businesses that could not afford to set up their own website the chance to set one up free of charge.
