Two special green thumbs helped Yooralla in Noble Park to set up an accessible garden.
The accommodation centre featured on ABC television program Gardening Australia on 29 April following a visit from the crew, including hosts Costa Georgiadis and Jane Edmanson.
The duo worked with the residents to help them with planting and showed them how to care of their new crops.
“The residents absolutely loved every aspect of it,” Yooralla service manager Helen-Ann said.
“And so did the crew – Costa stayed late on the second day of filming to make sure everything was completed properly – he even cancelled his flight home!”
Yooralla customers Estell, Ben, Sharon and Yann, plus others, put the finishing touches on the garden and learnt how to take care of it.
It was Estell, a big fan of the show, who first reached out to Gardening Australia and asked the team to visit.
Helen-Ann said the garden would help to develop a program call Patch to Plate.
“Patch to Plate is all about growing our own food and vegetables in the garden and then cooking them up in our kitchen,” she said.
“The residents living here are really interested in gardening and growing vegetables.
“In fact, many of them watch the program every week.”
The garden has been designed to cater for all the residents living at the home, with decking and raised garden beds.
“The whole crew was so welcoming and friendly,” Helen-Ann said.
“It was a wonderful experience for the residents – they’re still buzzing from it.”
