POLICE are warning Asian business people to be aware of an extortion attempt sweeping the south-east suburbs.
Dandenong Detective Senior Constable Stuart Freeman said up to 60 businesses have received phone calls from a man, demanding cash to assist him fly family members to Australia from China. He speaks Mandarin.
“When the victims queried or refused his repeated demands, he threatens that he will harm both them and their families,” Det Freeman said.
He said the latest reported incident happened on Monday 8 June about 1.15pm. Police are appealing for anyone with information to come forward and report to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
