Politicians and staffers pitted themselves against Doveton Special Soccer School for their annual friendly at Soccer 5s Dandenong South.
In an entertaining clash, the DSSS emerged triumphant 5-4 against a talented ALP side including local MPs and ministers Gabrielle Williams and Luke Donnellan, and former federal pollie Alan Griffin.
It was a chance for the school’s players to build relationships with the MPs, said DSSS founder Juan Carlos Loyola.
Similarly the soccer school has a regular match with Victoria Police members.
“It’s a way for our players to meet people. They want to meet the community at different levels.”
The DSSS has been running soccer training and games for players with intellectual disabilities for 26 years.
Its latest ambition is to tour China in their first international tournament in May. It is currently fundraising for the $2500-a-player trip.
Mr Loyola, a former Australian head coach, is nearing his 70th birthday but has no plans of stepping down from the school.

“It is to show the community that if you can give us a chance, they can be like you and me. They can be a part of a life that we have every day.
“It is not just to learn how to kick a ball, but they’re learning to be a good person.”
