Driver rights may turn into wrongs

MOTORISTS will not be allowed to make right turns onto Princes Highway from Henty Street, Dandenong, if new road safety proposals are adopted.
The City of Greater Dandenong and VicRoads will investigate placing traffic lights at the James Street and Princes Highway intersection, and making traffic route adjustments to the Henty Road and Princes Highway intersection.
Vic Roads figures show there were 21 crashes at the intersection between January 2000 and December 2004, which has led council to investigate preventative measures.
Council’s engineering services director, Tim Tamlin, said the combined proposal banned righthand turns from Henty Street to the Princes Highway because of a lack of driver visibility, which is thought to be causing the accidents. The proposal involved a letterbox campaign by VicRoads to gauge residents’ concerns.
