GREATER Dandenong council has honoured its former cultural facilities director Paul Streefkerk by naming the Drum Theatre’s rehearsal room after him.
Mr Streefkerk, who passed away suddenly in 2009, was a well respected member of Greater Dandenong’s rich arts fraternity.
His dedication and passion for arts led to him being an instrumental player in the building of the Drum Theatre.
Greater Dandenong mayor Roz Blades said naming the room was a fitting tribute to Mr Streefkerk.
“Paul was passionate about the performing arts and during his time at the council he worked tirelessly to build business and community support for the theatre,” she said.
“With his skills and experience, gained at the Darebin Arts and Entertainment Centre and the Frankston Arts Centre, Paul worked closely with management, builders and the community to bring the vision for the Drum Theatre to life.
“The rehearsal room is an integral part of the Drum Theatre, providing an affordable rehearsal space in the south east region of Melbourne.
“Paul was particularly proud of the rehearsal room and the opportunities it provided to attract large scale productions to Greater Dandenong.”
Mr Streefkerk’s family unveiled a commemorative plaque on Friday 11 February, recognising the wonderfulcontribution he made to theDrum Theatre’s reputation as a landmark performing arts precinct.
The Paul Streefkerk rehearsal room will be a lasting tribute to a well respected friend and colleague of the City of Greater Dandenong.
