PLANNING Minister Matthew Guy visited Dandenong last week to announce the construction of a link between Dandenong Railway Station and the city centre.
As part of the Revitalising Central Dandenong project, the plan includes a new public plaza, Station North Plaza, and City Street to better connect those travelling on public transport to the city centre.
“These projects will deliver a safer, well-lit and pedestrian-friendly connection that encourages people to use public transport and walk to central Dandenong’s main retail and commercial office area,” he said.
Mr Guy said the project would help reshape Melbourne’s second city into an active and vibrant city.
The project will include a shared pedestrian and vehicle zone along City Street, new street frontages for future buildings built on VicUrban land, new trees, new car parking spaces and a 15,000-litre underground water tank.
The plaza will also feature an iconic 28-metre light tower as its centrepiece.
City of Greater Dandenong major Roz Blades said once complete, the plaza and City Street would encourage people to come into Dandenong to eat, socialise and shop.
“I am looking forward to providing residents who live in Greater Dandenong the best possible service because they deserve it,” Cr Blades said.
VicUrban’s General Manager of Urban Revitalisation, Dominic Arcaro said City Street would become a major pedestrian way into Dandenong and would help turn the city back into the vibrant place it once was.
“The connection is vitally important to bring people into the centre of Dandenong,” he said.
“Better connections will encourage more job-creating businesses to locate to currently underutilised land north of the railway station.”
City Street will be located with Walker Street to the north, Thomas Street to the east, Foster Street for the south and Ruddock Street to the west.
Station North Plaza will be located at Robinson Street and will link to City Street, providing an easy link for public transport users.
Preliminary City Street works have commenced near Ruddock Street and construction on the plaza will start soon.
