THE City of Greater Dandenong, in conjunction with Victoria Police, has expanded its program aimed at reducing alcohol consumption in public places.
The council’s residential amenities officers are working with police to enforce the local law prohibiting the consumption of alcohol and possession of an open container of alcohol in public.
Street signs and footpath stencils have been installed to raise awareness about the law.
“The local law was introduced with a view to limiting anti-social behaviour in our community and this signage will assist us in getting the message across,” said Greater Dandenong mayor Roz Blades.
Councillor Blades encouraged liquor retailers to display posters to educate the community.
She said police would inspect licensed premises to ensure they complied fully with liquor licensing laws.
The program builds on a pilot project launched in Noble Park Shopping Centre in 2009.
It has been considered for other precincts as well to ensure all public spaces are as safe and welcoming as possible.
