The good word on a fringe performance

By Nicole Williams
DANDENONG Theatre Company is putting on a new production but ‘Don’t Take it as Gospel’.
The production cheekily explores the publication of the world’s most popular book, the bible, including influences from publishing, editing and Dan Brown.
‘Don’t Take it as Gospel’ is told from the point of view of four unemployed writers, who are also disciples, drinking in a bar.
Theatre company president and assistant director Colin Morley said it was a celebration.
“It is irreverent, but it’s still a celebration, with a biblical setting and strong references to contemporary pop culture,” he said.
‘Don’t Take it as Gospel’, which will be performed at the 2011 Melbourne Fringe Festival, was written by the theatre company’s Matt Caton.
Mr Morley said the script was perfect for the Fringe Festival.
“Earlier this year, Matt sent me a text message to say that he was half-way through writing what he thought was an ‘OK’ script, Mr Morley said.
“He later forwarded me this script to read over I knew instinctively we were onto a winner.”
‘Don’t Take it as Gospel’ will show at the Old Council Chambers, Trades Hall, Carlton, from 24 September to 8 October.
Tickets are $15 to $18 and can be purchased by calling 9660 9666 or visiting www.melbournefringe.com.au.
