Art is icing on the cake- Rhonda Meek said the real joy of cake decorating is the smiles it brings to her family and friends. 72099

SHE is an artist with a sweet tooth so it is appropriate that Rhonda Meek has a talent for cake decorating.
The Noble Park resident has been cake decorating for 20 years and prides herself on making breathtaking cakes for her friends and family.
Having always had a flair for craft, Ms Meek had to wait until her daughters were grown up and could look after themselves before she started taking classes – just in time for the big birthdays, weddings and christenings.
“I just love craft work and it was something I always wanted to do because it just looked beautiful,” she said.
“That was something I could do and 20 years later I’m still at it.”
Ms Meek said she would try her hand at anything her family and friends asked for, sometimes it just took a little brain power.
“I’ll make whatever anyone wants,” she said.
“You can make anything you can imagine out of icing, you just need to work out how to support it so it doesn’t fall apart!”
She has created dogs, birds, fairies, flowers, computers, giant cupcakes, wedding cakes and christening cakes, all in the form of sugar art.
Ms Meek said the real joy came from big smile when the cake was brought out – and then eating it.
“I know a lot of people say we can’t cut it but that’s what it’s made for – to eat and enjoy.”
Along with her friends from the Cake Decorators Association of Victoria, Ms Meek will be showing her skills at the Melbourne Craft and Sewing Show next week. “We will probably be demonstrating Christmas plaques and things to go on the Christmas cakes,” she said.
The Craft and Sewing Show will be held on 27 to 31 October at the Caulfield Racecourse.
