Lions’ 10-run mauling

SPRINGVALE Lions went 1-1 from last week’s matches, defeated by Newport 5-3 before dominating Sunshine 14-4 on Sunday.
The Lions started slowly against Sunshine, before hitting in six runs in the top of the fourth innings and continuing the rout with three runs in the seventh and two each in the eight and ninth to cap off the 10-run win.
“That’s the way it goes sometimes doesn’t it,” Springvale coach Mick Wearne said. “Everyone got among the hits, so it’s definitely a turn-around from the first couple of games. I think we got 15 hits and that’s where we won it. We’re on the winners list now, so that’s definitely a plus. It’s a tough draw for us, but we can move on now and do what we can with the games we’ve got.”
Scott Baillie threw eight innings and kept Sunshine relatively muted at the plate, while Sean Howe had four hits and five RBIs and import player Dominic Ramos continued to impress, hitting two home runs.
On Thursday night, the Lions could not peg back Newport, going down 5-3 under lights at the Melbourne Ball Park.
The Lions face St Kilda at home, which will test Springvale, according to Wearne.
IN other results, the seconds were beaten 5-4 by Sunshine, the thirds thumped Sunshine at home 14-4 to mirror the seniors result and the fourths made it three-for-four with a 16-1 shellacking of Sunshine
In the women’s matches, Springvale A 21 monstered Doncaster B 21-2 and Springvale C snuck home against Bundoora A 13-12. In Pool C, Springvale B was bested by Footscray A 9-1.
