FLOWERS, birds and butterflies have replaced a building site at Dandenong Valley Special School.
The Narre Warren school was over-run by 45 Bunnings workers last Wednesday to re-create a sensory garden on the school grounds.
Principal Susan Chernishoff said it was an amazing day.
“It was like Backyard Blitz on steroids,” she said.
“It was one of those ‘good to be alive days’… It was a magical day.”
Team Members from Bunnings Warehouse Dandenong were joined by members from Sandown, Pakenham, Cranbourne, Fountain Gate, Notting Hill, Morwell and Bairnsdale as well as two senior school students.
“They donated their times and goods to clean-up like mad, reinstate paths, plant plants and reinstate the waterfall,” Ms Chernishoff said.
“It’s a little oasis and the students are absolutely adoring it.”
Ms Chernishoff said Bunnings had organised a horticulturalist to choose the plants for the garden so it was sensitive to the idea of the sensory garden, the plants are soft to touch and lovely smelling.
Paths were also made from different materials, like rubber and wood, so students in wheelchairs can also have a sensory experience.
