Mathew’s a cut above

GREATER Dandenong Chamber of Commerce Young Enterprise nominee Mathew Atherton has stormed the world of hairdressing since starting his apprenticeship in 2001.
The 22-year-old Dandenong resident was Victorian Hairdressing Apprentice of the Year in 2004 and has since won many notable awards including Headmasters Overall Champion, HBIA Intermediate Champion and has been part of the Australian Fame Team.
Mr Atherton has taken his skills around the world, representing Australia in London, America, Borneo and New Zealand.
“It’s a really exciting industry,” he said. “And I’ve been lucky enough to get to see the travel side of it.”
Mr Atherton said it was great to be recognised and the chamber nomination was a big step in his career in terms of developing his portfolio and recognition.
Working in the family business, he has also been able to work as an educator, teaching others about the ins and outs of hairdressing.
Mr Atherton has many plans for his future and next year will go to China to compete in a number of hair shows, organise photo shoots for his portfolio, travel around Australia as an educator and still have time to cut hair in the family business in Dandenong.
“I’ve got a lot more to do than what I’ve done,” he said. “Hopefully next year will be bigger and better.”
