SHE has callouses on her fingers and her hands ache, but Frances Burrows just can’t stop knitting.
In just three years, Ms Burrows has knitted 200 blankets for the less fortunate in Eastern Europe.
Her efforts will be celebrated this weekend’s fund-raiser where she will be presented with a certificate for finishing her 200th single bed sized blanket.
Ms Burrows is part of a group who knit for Mission without Borders who come together at “The Workshop” at 8 Birch Avenue, Dandenong North to knit blankets for orphans and poor communities in Romania, Ukraine, Bosnia, Albania, Moldova and Bulgaria.
They came together after Ms Burrow’s friend Jenny Grainger visited her sponsor child in Eastern Europe.
“There is so much poverty over there, and it gets so cold in winter,” Ms Grainger said.
Last winter temperatures fell as low as -37C in some parts and so they knitted blankets, beanies, scarves, jumpers, gloves for those who cannot afford them.
Last year the group, including thousands of women from all around Australia, sent five 20.- foot containers with goods valued at close to $1 million.
On Saturday 6 October, at 7.30pm the group is holding a dinner to raise funds, at the Dandenong North Uniting Church. It costs about $3000 to send each container.
