Dandenong council workers to consider lifting work bans

GREATER Dandenong council workers are meeting tomorrow to discuss lifting work bans that have closed cricket venues and rubbished streets in Greater Dandenong.

Greater Dandenong Council has made a revised pay offer to council workers, in the face of stepped-up work bans announced by the Australian Services Union on Tuesday.

Australian Services Union organiser James Weissmann said ASU members would discuss whether to lift the work bans tomorrow.

A vote on the pay offer will take place on Tuesday.

‘‘It is my understanding that the bans are still in place,’’ Mr Weissmann said.

‘‘I will be having discussions with our members about the bans tomorrow. I’m not in a position to predict the course of action next week.’’

Workers had earlier rebuffed pay rises of 3.5 per cent a year, and rolled out bans on emptying street bins and mowing lawns since mid September.

They had called for 4 per cent pay rises and free parking near the council’s under-construction offices in central Dandenong.

On Tuesday, the ASU announced a ban on preparing cricket turf pitches, causing Dandenong and Districts Cricket Association to move games outside the municipality and jeopardising Premier Cricket matches.

Yesterday, the council announced it was seeking Fair Work Australia advice on lifting the bans. It coincided with a resumption of negotiations between the ASU and the council.
