A MAN and his son had a lucky escape from a plane crash in Bangholme on Sunday.
CFA crews from Springvale, Keysborough and Dandenong and MFB crews from Highett and Mentone were on standby at Moorabbin Airport as the plane approached from the south with engine difficulties about 4pm on 14 October.
But the plane didn’t make it to the airport and crashed in a property at the end of Soden Road in long grass, flipping over onto its nose as it came to rest.
Station officer Matt Jones from Springvale Fire Brigade said both occupants were very lucky to have survived the impact.
The man, 50, and his 13-year-old son climbed through the window. A helicopter crew had set out from Moorabbin Airport and met them as they got out of the plane.
The farmer who owned the property was operating his mower when he saw the plane coming down and also went over to help.
Ambulance Victorian spokesman Paul Bentley said paramedics were called to the incident about 4.15pm and took the pair to Dandenong Hospital in a stable condition with minor injuries.
