LOCAL police have urged drivers to take care this Australia Day holiday after six fatalities were recorded on Victorian roads at the same time last year.
Acting Assistant Commissioner Peter Billing this week reminded drivers in Melbourne’s south east that driver fatigue and lack of attention contributed to last year’s deaths.
“As this is the last holiday break before a return to school for the kids, we realise that families will want to savour that last trip to the beach or holiday destination,” he said.
“Whether you are driving through the south eastern districts of Melbourne such as Dandenong, or Casey, the peninsula districts, or rural communities such as Latrobe and Wellington, police will be out in force to ensure a safe passage for all commuters.”
He said booze buses out in force as well as the threat of bush fires may cause holiday delays.
Asst Comm Billing asked drivers to be patient under these circumstances to prevent further tragedy.
Last year’s Australia Day holiday was marred by a quadruple fatality at Fish Creek.
