SPRINGVALE teenager Kristian Clancy is celebrating winning a university place after a gruelling wait since December.
The Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre (VTAC) last week ended the waiting for uni and TAFE hopefuls with the announcement of first round offers.
Kristian chose not to have the announcement published in a newspaper, instead opting to wait for a letter from VTAC detailing his fate.
The former Springvale Secondary College student had selected the Bachelor of Social Science Youth Work degree as his first VTAC preference.
He said his mother opened the letter during a phone conversation, telling him of the good news.
“At first I thought my mum was saying it to joke around with me, because she knew I wanted to get in.
“She just told me ‘you got in’ and I said ‘you’re joking’, and she said ‘no, you actually got in’.”
Kristian said he was relieved and initially so ecstatic he cried out in disbelief while walking to Glenferrie railway station.
He didn’t know what to expect from university life but said he would look forward to meeting new people, undertaking work experience and writing essays.
Meanwhile, Dandenong’s Chisholm Institute of TAFE made offers to 200 prospective students across its 14 VTAC-listed diplomas.
Jo Saunders, Chisholm Institute manager of marketing and corporate communication, said the most popular VTAC course offered on campus was the Diploma of Arts, Graphic Arts course, followed by diplomas in Hospitality Management and Event Management.
For students who selected TAFE courses as their higher preferences, the system worked differently from university entry, Ms Saunders said.
Some required interviews, folio presentations and the student must have completed Year 12.
