THE City of Greater Dandenong Mayoral Charity Bowls Day will be reincarnated as the Rotary Club of Noble Park Bowls Day after the council dumped its support of the long-running fundraising event.
Last week councillors voted against supporting the 21-year-old charity event that last year raised almost $12,000 for local charities in need of financial aid.
They rejected a notice of motion from Keysborough Ward councillor Roz Blades to grant $5000 to the Rotary Club of Noble Park to organise the event on the council’s behalf. The council’s failure to support the event will eliminate $5000 from funds raised for local charities but the Rotary Club of Noble Park is optimistic that next year’s event on Sunday, 10 February will still be a success.
The council will sponsor the trophies to the value of $500, Rotary Club of Noble Park bowls day committee chairman Keith Maxwell said.
But, according to the bowling fraternity, the council has dumped its support of the day, and therefore would not be allowed naming rights.
The event will be called the Rotary Club of Noble Park Charity Bowls Day and organiser Keith Maxwell said he was now calling for businesses to sponsor the event with all funds going towards local charities.
Mr Maxwell said corporate sponsors would not only have their logo displayed on the day but would also be included on an interactive CD-ROM handed to participants.
