SANDOWN Cobras had their first taste of success since July 2005 when they beat South Yarra by 13 points at Frisch Holzer Park in their Southern Football League Division Three game on Saturday.
After a winless 2006 campaign, the Cobras looked like adding another loss to the ledger when South Yarra piled on four unanswered goals early in the first quarter.
But Sandown battled back and kicked four of the next five majors to draw within four points at the first huddle.
The Cobras, led by full-forward Clint Sheedy, who kicked seven goals, hit the front in the second quarter and never looked back.
Robert Kreskas was dominant in the midfield and Daniel Mulvogue impressed in the ruck.
Sandown has the chance to win two from two when it clashes with the Dandenong Demons at Edinburgh Reserve on Saturday.
Doveton Eagles v Cerberus
A FOUR-goal haul to Doveton Eagles’ recruit Peter Dye inspired the Division Three side to its first win of the 2007 season against a struggling Cerberus outfit at Power Reserve on Saturday.
The Eagles used the home ground advantage to surge toward the 37-point victory after the game was relocated from Cerberus to Doveton due to ground unavailability at the navy base.
Unlike last week, the Eagles maintained their work rate for all four quarters, and had contributors across the ground. Brett Reid and Brayden Keown were two of the Eagles’ best.
Dye has impressed in the first two games of the season with his hard-running and magnet-like attraction to the ball. Justin Wild booted three goals for Doveton, which occupies fifth position on the ladder.
