TAKING part in the 2006 MIDDWAY Community Walk and Festival for Mental Health is the best way you can throw your support behind the Stop the Stigma campaign.
On Wednesday, 11 October, thousands of residents are expected to fill the streets of central Dandenong for a march from Dandenong Park to Dandenong Market, where a festival will ensue.
The walk and festival will not only be an opportunity to learn more about mental health and help break down the stigmas, it will also be a fun day full of free activities including massages, healthy food, live entertainment and information stalls.
Comedian and guest speaker Peter Rowsthorn will join the march and festivities for his second year running.
Mental Illness Doesn’t Discriminate What About You? (MIDDWAY) is an alliance of carers, mental illness sufferers and service providers aiming to raise community awareness about mental health issues.
Part of their campaigning involves breaking down the stigmas and myths associated with mental illness that can be just as damaging as the illness itself in isolating sufferers from the rest of society.
MIDDWAY will be working with Eastern Regions Mental Health Association, the peak service provider for mentally ill people in Melbourne’s south-east.
ERMHA has 500 clients on its registry and is campaigning for more funding to expand its services to the 12,000 people suffering severe mental illnesses in the south-east.
The MIDDWAY Community Walk and Festival for Mental Health will start at 11am on Wednesday 11 October, from Dandenong Park, Melway reference 90 E9.
