COUNCIL officers could routinely doorknock to check for unregistered pets in Greater Dandenong under a new animal management plan.
The plan is under development to outline a number of key services, programs and strategies for the city’s furry future.
The plan is a requirement by the State Government of all local governments and must be in place by the end of 2008.
Under an animal management plan, responsible pet ownership will be promoted, dog attacks will be minimised, and registration will be encouraged.
The council this week said in a statement that methods to achieving the outcomes could include officers knocking on residents’ doors to check if pets are registered.
Other methods include compulsory desexing of animals to reduce overpopulation, expanded off leash areas to promote healthy pets, and increased facilities in parks for animal owners.
