Footy fun with a message

A SPECIAL Marngrook (Indigenous Football) Carnival will be held in Dandenong on Sunday to celebrate the life of local identity Greg Harrison who died earlier this year.
Representatives from Greater Dandenong’s indigenous community are organising the carnival in honour of Mr Harrison, a local Aboriginal man, who was a major supporter of Marngrook in the Greater Dandenong region.
With a theme of “Gone but not forgotten — Rebirth,” the Marngrook Carnival — a drug and alcoholfree event — is at Greaves Reserve in Dandenong on Sunday from 10am to 5pm.
Council’s festivals and events coordinator Leonie King said the event would provide a chance to celebrate tolerance in the community, as well as promoting indigenous football.
“Mr Harrison was on the organising committee of the first Marngrook carnival in Dandenong three years ago and he was a strong supporter and advocate for the game and local players,” she said.
“There will be groups from all ages participating, and nonindigenous players are welcome. There will be a barbecue and refreshments available and the event is open to all people to attend and support our local indigenous community.
“We hope as many residents as possible will support the event in a show of respect to a man who contributed so much to the community.”
Cr Angela Long said she hoped to see a big crowd would attend and celebrate the life of Mr Harrison.
“This day will also promote what the community can do without drugs and alcohol,” Cr Long said.
There will also be a “Gone but not forgotten — Rebirth” walk through the streets of Dandenong at 5pm tomorrow (Friday), followed by a small ceremony in Hemmings Park.
The City of Greater Dandenong, Victoria Police and McKillop Family Services are supporting the events.
