Water program offers relief

BUSINESSES have received a trickle of drought relief from South East Water after the water authority announced last week it would tanker water directly to affected customers.
South East Water said 100 million litres of groundwater would help provide drought relief for businesses and south east Melbourne’s dry and parched sportsgrounds.
Managing director Dennis Cavagna said he was delighted that local businesses would get some relief from Stage 3 water restrictions.
“With alternative water supplies not subject to the same restrictions as drinking water, we are looking to provide solutions to the community,” he said.
“We have extended our program to provide alternate types of water to our customers across our area in an effort to minimise the economic, environmental and community impact of water restrictions.
“Local businesses and councils will be given priority over residents as we expect demand to be met or exceeded by these customers.”
The water is not suitable for drinking, but is an excellent resource for industry to green sporting fields and recreational areas, Mr Cavagna said.
“We are making Class C recycled water available to an increasing number of customers through tankering services from treatment plants at Mt Martha, Pakenham and Carrum,” he said.
