Regional mailing gets sorted

THE downgrading of a Gippsland post office will see mail brought to the Dandenong Letters Centre (DLC) in an Australia Post plan to centralise mail sorting at Dandenong.
Australia Post state communications manager Janice Mascini said only a small amount of mail would be transferred to the DLC and that the move would not result in new jobs.
She said the mail sorting machinery at the DLC could process more than half a million items of mail each hour.
“When you look at the quantities, it’s not really going to change much at Dandenong,” she said.
The relocation of morning mail from the Gippsland region to the DLC occurred in July.
Ms Mascini said other proposed processing changes at Gippsland would not take place until 2006 and would be implemented in stages. She said this would involve relocating all Friday postings to the DLC.
There are 56 staff at Gippsland Mail Centre and most will remain at the centre which will continue to process mail from Bairnsdale, Sale, Lakes Entrance and far East Gippsland.
“Customers can be assured there will be no visible change to their mail service and delivery performance will not be compromised,” Ms Mascini said.
