$200,000 for your convenience

Nathan Johnston
THE City of Greater Dandenong is to spend more than $200,000 on safer toilet facilities at Hemmings Park.
The park and its old public toilet block were the scene of a series of assaults in April and May this year.
Improved lighting and a new location for the toilet block closer to the Princes Highway will make the park safer, according to councillor Clare O’Neil.
She said the area was set to become a focus for youth activities, with a new BMX track and upgrades to Armitage Hall for the Muso Network also part of the plans.
“We need to ensure that we provide a safe environment where they have all of the things they need,” Cr O’Neil said.
The council agreed to a deal with WC Convenience Management worth $203,440 for the removal of the existing toilet block and the installation of a prefabricated, twin cubicle, selfcleaning unisex toilet.
The facility will automatically lock when in use, shuts down at night, and automatically reopens at a set time.
According to a council report, the automatic toilets have been a success for the Whitehorse City Council and the City of Glen Eira. The toilets will be installed between the skate park and the playground.
