Mums take a break

MOTHER’S Day has come early for the young mums of Greater Dandenong thanks to a special afternoon tea being held today (Thursday) by the Visy Cares Centre.
The Young Mums Group, facilitated by Greater Dandenong’s Youth Services, Maternal and Child Health and Dandenong Neighbourhood House, helps to link young mothers with appropriate support services within the city.
Mission Australia also provides funding for the group.
Held once a week, the group engages in different activities including baby massage, basic cooking and first aid as well as visits by representatives from Chisholm Institute of TAFE and Centrelink.
Even dads are welcome.
To celebrate Mother’s Day this Sunday, the Visy Cares Centre invited the group to a special afternoon tea at its Clow Street building.
Mayor Youhorn Chea said the group provided the mothers with valuable assistance.
“It can be very daunting becoming a mother, regardless of age, but socialising in a mums’ group is a great way to share knowledge and concerns with other mums who are most likely facing the same challenges,” he said.
“There is also the benefit of being introduced to other service providers such as counselling, employment and training and financial assistance.”
Every second week a maternal health nurse visits the group to provide advice and check ups for children.
The group welcomes new young mothers and their babies to come along to the afternoon tea as well as their weekly sessions which are held every Thursday at the Visy Cares Centre between 1pm and 3pm.
