Request for speed

LEADING Pearcedale trainer Jason Thompson’s rising star By Request registered her sixth consecutive victory in winning her heat of the Group 1 ADVANCE Laurels Classic at Sandown Park last week.
Beginning moderately from box one, the raging $1.40 favourite dashed away from her rivals in the home straight to register a 3.75-length victory over bolter Lady Alouette in 30.14 seconds.
Emerging sprinter Sweet Claudia scored the fastest win in Thursday’s Laurels heats.
Prepared by David Dawson in Trafalgar, Sweet Claudia ($2.90) led early before being headed on the back straight by favourite Oxley Gazelle. However the daughter of Elgrando proved too strong in the run home, winning by 2.5 lengths in 30.09.
New South Wales raider Dana Jenny caused the biggest upset of the night when she upstaged the night’s shortest-priced favourite Pure Burst, while other heat winners were Ja Ja (30.18), Glamour Cru (30.27) and Kikiku (30.42), Intent On Gold (30.53) and Or Catra (30.59).
Earlier in the night, recent G1 Brisbane Gold Cup winner Miss Brook scorched the track in 30.10 in a 515-metre solo trial in preparation for next week’s heats of the Group 2 McKenna Memorial.
The semi-finals of the Laurels Classic will be run at Sandown Park tonight.
